Lee Soo-jung (Ha Ji Won) is a travel agent who is seeking her good luck in Bali after a harsh and unforgiving childhood. She meets Jae-min (Jo In Sung), Kang In-wook (So Ji Sup), and Young-joo (Park Ye Jin) in Bali, three seemingly perfect people entangled in a triangle of love. When Lee Soo-jung finds herself back in Seoul, her desire for success leads her to seek Jae-min for a job, unwittingly setting off a course of events that further complicate the love triangle.

What Happened in Bali is a drama that reveals the inner materialistic desires of people. It reflects upon the sometimes ugly (but truthful) side of man where nothing matters more than money.

This series revolves around bright hardworking loving mother Go Doo Shim as Lee Young Ja who does her best to insure that her family has a happy life. Her husband Joo Hyun as Kim Do Chil unfortunately ruins the atmosphere of the happy family by having an affair with a woman who comes to carry his child. The eldest daughter Bae Jung Ok as Mi Oak suggests to her mother that she get a divorce, while the youngest daughter Han Go Eun as Mi Soo finds attraction to the handsome looks of an investor who harbors a deep dark secret. Jung-suh and Song-joo grew up together. They were always there for each other. Tragedy begins when Song Joo begins his studies overseas without Jung-suh. Jung-suh's father remarries Tae Mira. Together with Tae-hwa, they start anew. Song-joo is led to believe that she is dead. However, when they meet again one day, he is determined to remind her of the love they had for one another. When fate finally seemed to be on their side, Jung-suh is diagnosed with eye cancer.

Growing up as the best of friends, Sang-doo (Bi) and Chae Eun-hwan (Gong Hyo Jin) make lots of lasting memories during their shortened high school years. When Eun-hwan's family goes into bankruptcy, debtors rush into their house to grab all of her family's belongings away. When somebody takes her father's old record player that she really loves, Sang-doo goes after the guy. In a physical fight, the man falls off the bridge and enters a coma. Eun-hwan, not knowing this, runs away from the town. Sang-doo goes to jail, returning to find out that his family and Eun-hwan have left him. Years later, he becomes a gigolo (with his uncle) in order to raise the hospital bills for his sick daughter (Se-ra (Hong Soo Hyun) claims that Bori is her daughter). Eventually, he meets his long-lost first-love, Eun-hwan as a high school math teacher. In an effort to never lose her again, he returns as a high school student (to finish his last years of high school) and gets placed in Eun-hwan's class. In numerous funny yet heart-touching moments, Sang-doo vows never to become a gigolo again. Yet, his past deeds have caught up with him, and he is soon sought after by the police. Eun-hwan's boyfriend, Min-suk (Lee Dong Gun), also does not want to let go of Eun-hwan. First love is something beautiful yet painful to these two lovers, who have reunited after ten years to find out that everything is not the same anymore.
